Cyclone Amphan Relief Efforts

Amphan Cyclone: IMD warns of cyclone Amphan; rains, gale likely ...

Between May 16 and May 21, Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan caused widespread damage in East India and Bangladesh as one of the strongest cyclones to hit the subcontinent in recent times. Heavy damages include thousands of uprooted trees, disturbed electricity and phone lines, and flattened houses as well as at least 85 deaths caused by the tropical storm. Nearly 30 million people in rural and coastal communities in West Bengal and Odisha are expected to have been affected by this cyclone. The impact of Amphan has been amplified due to the COVID-19 lockdown and ensuing government lockdowns, with many families unable to evacuate in advance and crucial relief efforts delayed.
